Born on 23 December 1970, Amjad began learning qawwali music from his father at age nine and joined his father on stage to perform in 1988 at age 12. He from then on remained one of the most acclaimed qawwals on the Indian subcontinent and performed around the world.
On 22 June 2016, Amjad Sabri was attacked by two armed motorcyclists when he was traveling in Liaquatabad Town. The motorcyclists opened fire at his car critically injuring Sabri, an associate and his driver. Sabri was shot twice in the head and once on the ear.The three men including Sabri were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Sabri died shortly after.
Many people reacted to his targeted killing through television and social media. Imran Khan tweeted: "Shocked at the murder of famous qawwal Amjad Sabri & his companions in Karachi. A complete failure of law & order & writ of the govt." Dr. Tahir ul-Qadrisaid: "I strongly condemn terrorist attack on Amjad Sabri. My heart goes out to the bereaved family." Fakhar-e-Alam said: "We played cricket together last Friday, he was always smiling ... a kind and gentle soul. I can't believe Amjad Sabri has been taken away from us". He also said that Amjad Sabri had submitted an application for protection as per his family but Home department did Nothing. News anchor Sana Bucha tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the gruesome murder of #AmjadSabri He was a great human being. U will be greatly missed Amjad Sb!"
