‘Shah Rukh Khan has turned down many Hollywood films’
There is no doubt that superstar Shah Rukh Khan commands and enjoys enviable fan following both in India and overseas. One has to see it to believe it how people go crazy at a mere glimpse of SRK, especially his fans overseas. Hence, his millions of admirers wonder why SRK hasn’t been offered a Hollywood film yet. There is no denying that his fans across the globe want to see SRK spell some magic in Hollywood too and it’s next to impossible to think that the superstar has never been offered a film in the west. SRK’s best friend and one of the talented filmmakers, Farah Khan recently said in an interview that she knows for a fact that SRK has time and again been offered several Hollywood movies but the actor had to politely turn them down because he thought that the films and the roles offered to him either didn’t suit him or didn’t do justice to his image or presence in the film. Well, he is not called the King Khan for nothing. The superstar would certainly not settle for anything mediocre or something that’s lesser than spectacular!
Ek Tha Tiger
Shah Rukh Khan could have been Kabir Khan’s tiger if he had not rejected the film. Kabir had approached King Khan for the film. However, despite liking the script, the actor had to turn down the offer due to date issues. He was working on Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan at the time and couldn’t accommodate another film in his diary. The film finally went to Salman Khan, who was cast opposite his ex-flame, Katrina Kaif. Incidentally, Kat was also shooting for Jab Tak Hai Jaan with SRK at the time. Since both Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ek Tha Tiger turned out to be hits, we don’t think SRK regretted the decision much.
3 Idiots was the third film after Lagaan and Rang De Basanti that proved to be Shah Rukh’s loss and Aamir’s gain. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had once told PTI that SRK had been the first choice, not just 3 Idiots but for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Ferrari Ki Sawari too. But King Khan had to back out again, this time due to date issues. And as we know, Aamir Khan was third time lucky. The film went on to become the biggest Bollywood grosser of the time. However, Vidhu did not regret losing out on SRK and said that it’s all about writing and getting the right actor for the right role, which he admitted, was difficult.
Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
Can you imagine Shah Rukh Khan in place of Sanjay Dutt as Munna Bhai? Rajkumar Hirani’s comedy about a miscreant trying to win his parents over by pursuing medical studies, was a huge hit. Not only was the film well received by the critics, it also managed to mint money at the box-office and catapult Sanjay Dutt’s reportedly dwindling career to great heights. However, few know that Shah Rukh Khan was the original choice for the role of Munna Bhai and Sanjay Dutt was considered to play Zaheer in the film. But when SRK refused to do the film, it went to Sanjay Dutt, who immediately agreed to do it and Zaheer was eventually played by Jimmy Shergill. SRK had reportedly backed out of the film citing back problems.
Aamir Khan couldn’t have been more thankful to Shah Rukh Khan. Had the latter not rejected Lagaan, Aamir wouldn’t have featured in the credits of one of the most illustrative films of his career. Ashutosh Gowarikar had a tough time finding the right actor for the role of Bhuvan as Shah Rukh had turned down the offer and suggested Aamir Khan’s name to essay the role. When Aamir Khan was finally convinced with the part, finding a producer became difficult. Mr Perfectionist then decided to produce it himself. The film was an immediate hit with the audience what with elements of cricket and entertainment luring most Indian to the theatres. Lagaan became the third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Kaho Na…Pyar Hai
Hrithik Roshan, too, can thank SRK for rejecting his debut flick, Kaho Na…Pyar Hai. Rakesh Roshan had approached SRK with the script but the baadshah was not convinced. Finally, Rakesh zeroed in on his own son for the double role. The film established Hrithik as the new Bollywood heartthrob. He also became the only actor to win both the Filmfare Award for Best Debut and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the same film. Moreover, the film entered the Limca Book of Records for scoring the greatest number of Awards won by a Bollywood film.
It is rumoured that Ashutosh Gowarikar wanted to cast Shah Rukh Khan in Jodhaa Akbar to recover the losses incurred by Swades. However, SRK turned down the offer as the film had a tough shooting schedule with far away locations. It is alleged that Shah Rukh wanted to spend more time with his kids during their vacation and therefore turned down the film. But rest is history! Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan played the perfect Jodhaa and Akbar. Hrithik also won the Filmfare Award for his performance. Well, it seems like Duggu has a lot to thank King Khan for!
Rang De Basanti
Six years after Shah Rukh Khan gave away Lagaan to Aamir Khan, he repeated his mistake by refusing to be a part of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti. Aamir Khan immediately lapped up the opportunity to be a part of the film that was about the struggle for Independence. The film was nominated at the BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category besides winning the Filmfare Award. SRK had once again lost the chance to be part of a cult film.
