When it comes to Sridevi, adjectives and superlatives begin to pale and fail. In the trailer of her engerly awaited new film “Mom”, she in seen at the peak of her performing power, furnishing an intensity and a helft far beyond what one expects in a film about the mother daughter relationship.
the trailer, which released on saturday, is swathed in mystery. It is a mother-daughter story and has some pretty strong male characters.Sajal Aly, who plays the daughter, Nawazuddin Saddiwui (he plays a sleazeball named DK), Akhaye Khanna and Adnan Siddiui leave a strong impact in the little that they are given to do in the trailer.
Nawazuddin, the chameleon of an actor, is seen in prosthetics for the first time. His balding pate and buck teeth scene with Sridevi where she cynically tells Nawaz, “God can’t be everywhere.” “That’s why he created the mother,” retorts Nawaz. It remains to be see how far this mother is willing to break the rules for her daughter’s sake. As expected, there are many moments of warm Kinship between the one-and only Sridevi and her screen daughter duo reminded of Waheeda Rehman and Sridvi in Yash Choopra’s Lamhe.
But the trailer gives nothing away as to the cause of the friction and drama between the mother and daughter. Who are the bad guys and who are the good guys in Mom? The trailer withholds this information. What we can say with utmost certainty is that Sridevi delivers yet delivers yet an other powerhouse performance. As mon to a teenage daughter, she looks ten years younger than her real age and ten times wiser than any mother put in a situation of crisis that seems to demand intuition. One thing we do know from the trailer, is that Sridevi isn’t Sajal’s birth mother in the movie. Debutant director Ravi Udyawaar seems to have handled the incredibly talented star-actress without keeling over in awe.
The narrative has a balanced, even and unostentatious feel to it. Mom looks like anothe winner for the mighty Sridevi. Plot: Devki is a loving wife, and a mother of two beautiful daughters, she seemingly has a perfect happy family. Yet, somehow the true happiness of being a mother eludes her. Arya,a sensitive girl cannot accept Devki and her love wholeheartedly. Arya belives, a mother does not enter the lite of a daughter. Devki patiently waits for Arya’s love and acceptance as she believes only a mother can truly understand the silence of her child. An unfortunate incident , further no return.
In such a situation a mother has to make a choice not between what is wrong or right but between what is wrong and very wrong. What will Devki do in such a situation? Will she fight for her daughters love knowing the consequences she may have to face? What will a woman do when she is challenged? MOM in cinemas 7th July.
