Bollywood playback singer Mika Singh has been booked for slapping a doctor who allegedly behaved inappropriately with women at a live concert in New Delhi on April 11.
The Mika Singh live in concert was organized by the Delhi Ophthalmological Society as a part of a three-day conference. During his performance, the singer asked all males in the audience to gather at the left and and the womenfolk to remain in the centre.
According to an eye-witness account published in The Indian Express, the music stopped and Mika was heard asking the bouncers to get a visibly inebriated doctor from among the audience on to the stage after he continued to mingle with the ladies despite repeated requests. Video footage provided by the eye-witness then shows the singer slapping the doctor after an exchange of obscene words and gestures.
This incident was followed by an outpour of outrage from the doctors present in the audience, who resorted to tearing the promotional materials and standees surrounding the stage and breaking musical instruments, forcing the police to intervene.
Mika Singh defended himself in an interview with Indian news websiteIBN by saying “I had made a humble request whilst being on stage, as I always do that the ladies and children should be given space to dance and enjoy the show. I asked the gentleman in the audience several times politely to move over to the side slightly and most complied straight away.”
He added, “However, there was a small group of men, who constantly ignored my requests. The ladies meanwhile were consistently asking me to ask them to move slightly. Again, I kept very calm and upon the ladies persistence I again requested the gentleman to give them some space. It was then that the particular doctor in mention starting swearing at me from the audience and showing his middle finger in front of all the doctors present. I realised at this point he was drunk which all the doctors also witnessed.”
Describing the incident, Mika said, “I called him up on stage, and asked him whether he would feel just as comfortable doing the same actions on stage or in front of his family. He continued his tirade of swearing after which I lost my cool which I probably shouldn’t have and slapped him.”
Mika Singh concluded with these words, “I did what I felt was for the betterment of our ladies and children and I will always continue to stand up against what is wrong.”
