Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, has been embroiled in several controversies over the last few months.
However, these hiccups haven’t deterred the makers and the film’s team. Deepika, who put her faith in the project from the word go, recently even expressed her wish to take the magnum opus to Cannes Film Festival.
At a recent event, when the actress was asked about taking ‘Padmavati’ to the prestigious film festival on the French Riviera, she said, “To take the film to Cannes will be the ideal case for me. Every film has its own journey. If it’s meant to happen, it will happen.
‘Padmavati’ is scheduled to release in November this year and if life has different plans for us, then that will happen.”‘Padmavati’ stars Deepika in the titular role with Shahid playing her husband Raja Rawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer as the antagonist Alauddin Khilji. The film is slated to release in November this year.
After the immense success of ‘Bajirao Mastani’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali began working on an even more ambitious project – ‘Padmavati’. The movie which stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has been in the news regularly ever since the project was announced. Mostly for controversial reasons, ‘Padmavati’ always managed to grab the headlines making it one of the most highly anticipated Bollywood films. Here’s taking a look at times when the movie grabbed everyone’s attention.
In March, as the cast and crew of the film was shooting at the Masai Pathar, located around 35 kms from Kolhapur, an unidentified group of men vandalized the sets of the film. The designer costumes for the film as well as animal feed had been torched resulting in damages worth crores. There were suspected to be a total of twenty culprits and the reason for this vandalism remained a mystery. However, this incident left Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the Bollywood fraternity really distraught as they felt that it was a direct attack on their creative liberties.Even before the vandalism on the sets, there was another disturbing incident that happened while the ‘Padmavati’ team was shooting at Jaigarh fort in Jaipur. A local outfit called the Rajput Karni Sena stormed the shooting spot on January 28 and roughed up the crew. Even as the guards and crew tried to stop the mob; the angered mob caught hold of the respected filmmaker and slapped him. The outfit alleged that Sanjay was distorting facts for his film and that they found it unacceptable. Finally, the two parties were able to work out a compromise but not before the issue became a national debate.
As soon as the news of the assault broke out, Bollywood celebs didn’t shy away from expressing their outrage. The biggest reaction came from actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who dropped Rajput from his name as a mark of protest and to express his shame. It was because the people who assaulted Bhansali were Rajputs themselves. Other than him a lot of celebs from the industry such as Karan Johar, Vishal Dadlani, Sonam Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Huma Qureshi, Anurag Kashyap, Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Arjun Kapoor and Dia Mirza expressed their anger on the issue and called the incident shameful and infuriating.
The series of misfortunes for the period film began long back in December last year when a tragic accident on the sets lead to the death of a crew member. A painter named Mukesh Dakia, fell from the scaffolding of the Goregaon sets. Efforts were made to save him but they ended in vain. Sanjay financially compensated the deceased crew member’s family. The film’s lead actress Deepika Padukone too expressed her grief on the matter.
While most news about ‘Padmavati’ is fraught with tragedy, there was a little something to be excited about as well. Ranveer Singh, who is playing Sultan Alaudin Khilji in the movie revealed a sneak peek of his character back in September. The actor posted an intense shot of his kohl covered eyes that looked truly menacing. He also disclosed that the movie will release in November 2017. He even went on to compare his dark character to that of Heath Ledger’s Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’. That is some standard to live up to!
Woes had begun for Sanjay Leela Bhansali even before the shooting for the movie kicked off. According to reports, the two male leads Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor did not see eye to eye on professional matters. Apparently, Ranveer’s character was initially meant to be portrayed as an anti-hero. However, since Shahid was roped in, Sanjay gave a meatier role to Shahid and changed Ranveer’s character arc to a full-fledged bad guy. Turned out that the ‘Befikre’ actor was not too happy with the changes and this led to the discord between the two, with Sanjay trying to play mediator. However, it looks like things worked out for the best as the shooting began on time and things progressed smoothly till January.
