The former Miss World literally has the world at her feet today. An international icon, Bollywood star and recording artist, Priyanka Chopra has worked her way into the film industry to prove she’s best and second to none. She’s versatile and multi-talented and few can match her star quality. On her birthday today, we look at some lesser known facts about the actress whose career in the Hindi film industry spans a little over a decade. Priyanka was born in Jamshedpur and lived in many parts of the country but takes Bareilly to be her real home. Her parents were physicians in the Indian Army. Priyanka was very close to her father, the late Dr. Ashok Chopra. The actress was very close to her father who passed away due to cancer at the age of 64. A road has been named after him, the Lt Col Ashok Chopra Marg in Andheri which was inaugurated by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. In an interview to NDTV.com, the actress was quoted saying, “Many people ask is this road being named after Dr Ashok Chopra because he is Priyanka Chopra’s father. No. I am here because I am Dr Ashok Chopra’s daughter.”
The former beauty queen who won the Miss World pageant in 2000, did not make her debut with Bollywood. Instead, she first appeared in the Tamil film Thamizhanin 2002. Interestingly, Pee Cee was supposed to make her B-town debut with the Abbas Mastan thriller Humraaz (2002) but she was replaced by Ameesha Patel of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai fame. Pee Cee is said to have cited schedule conflicts as the reason behind her opting out of the project but according to reports in various sections of the media, the producers said it was because of Priyanka’s other work commitments. She finally debuted with The Hero-Love Story of a Spy where she played a cameo.
While shooting the song “Do Me A Favor, Let’s Play Holi” in the movie Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005), she stepped on a live wire and received a shock. She was hospitalized for a day. Turned down the lead in Umrao Jaan (2006) to work in Bluffmaster! (2005).Turned down a part in London Dreams (2009) because she could not provide the shooting dates as she was busy with other films.
Priyanka is one of the most talented actresses today and is still raring to go! She has won the the National Film Award, the Filmfare Award and many other prestigious awards for Best Actress for her work in the film Fashion. Not only that, Pee Cee went on to bag Filmfare awards for her work in films like Andaaz, Aitraaz and 7 Khoon Maaf. She is the only Indian in the USA to have been selected at the state level for the National Opus Honor Choir, for her extensive charity work back in India and the USA, and joined the CAF and CII in their literacy program and is their ambassador.
Loves cars and owns a Porsche Cayenne, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class. Is said to be fond of designer duo Dolce and Gabbana. While she’s fondly called Pee Cee and Piggy Chopps, her pet name at home is Mimi and Sunshine. What makes her truly global is that the actress is the first Indian movie star to cast her foot impression in Italy’s celebrated Salvatore Ferragamo museum, joining the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Marliyn Monroe and Drew Barrymore.
According to a report in rediff.com, Priyanka Chopra’s main vocal influence was her father, who she said was “an incredible singer” and helped develop her interest in singing. Further to the report, she was also quoted saying that she was bullied while schooling in Boston due to her skin colour. She moved to the US at 13 to live with her aunt. Is a self proclaimed tomboy. Since Priyanka was very close to her father, she got a tattoo on her wrist that reads Daddy’s lil girl. Is trained in western classical music and Kathak.
Chopra turned down the role of Phaedra in Tarsem Singh’s Hollywood fantasy film Immortals because it conflicted with the shooting schedule of Vishal Bhardwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf. For her action-packed role in Don and Drona, Priyanka trained in specialized martial arts like Ju Jitsu, Karate and Gatka to look strong in these films and play her characters convincingly. Was even considered for inclusion in the Guinness World Records book for being the first film actress to play 12 roles in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Whats Your Rashee, which unfortunately did not do well at the box office.
Everyone knows that Priyanka has worked with International rapper Pitbull who is one of the most celebrated artists in the world today. But few know that the petite actress lent her voice for a Hollywood flick, Disney’s Planes where her character was called Ishani. According to E!, Priyanka Chopra was signed to Guess after CEO Paul Marciano met her and dubbed her ‘the young Sophia Loren’. She is the new Guess girl who has teamed up with pop star Bryan Adams. Some of the only other Indian actors to be signed as global fashion ambassadors are Shahrukh Khan for Tag Heuer and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for L’Oreal. According to her interview in Deccan Herald, she was quoted saying, “For as long as I can remember, Guess has been at the epicentre of fashion for women. I am honoured to be face of the brand and this iconic holiday campaign.”
