A new study suggests that coffee drinkers may live five years longer than non-drinkers. According to the study, drinking up to four cups of coffee a day can slow down biological aging by increasing the length of telomeres. Telomeres are caps that protect the ends of chromosomes.
A reduction in the length of telomeres in cells is associated with certain age-related diseases and is also considered a sign of increased cellular aging.
But this four-cup daily quota (which is equivalent to 400 mg of caffeine per day) did not show any benefit.
Experts say that the powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in coffee may be responsible for slowing down biological aging and increasing the length of telomeres.
