Bollywood’s famous couple Dharmendra Singh and Hema Malini are said to have secretly converted to Islam before their marriage.
89-year-old Dharmendra Singh, who recently passed away leaving millions of his fans in mourning, married actress Hema Malini in 1979.
Dharmendra Singh was already married and in Hinduism, a second marriage is not permitted while having a wife, nor can the first wife be divorced.
The Hindu Marriage Act also does not allow a Hindu to marry a second wife. It is said that this is why Dharmendra converted to Islam and Hema Malini converted to Islam to marry the Muslim Dharmendra.
After converting to Islam, Dharmendra Singh changed his name to Dilawar Khan and Hema Malini got married as Ayesha B.
At that time, the journalist who reported the marriage of Dharmendra and Hema Malini after converting to Islam had said that this is a fact whose truth will never come out.
It is also worth mentioning that in those days, heroes and heroines kept their marriages secret for years to save their film careers.
Therefore, this is not an unusual thing to happen in the past. Keeping marriages and religious conversions secret is a common thing in the film world.
When an attempt was made to get proof of the claim of converting to Islam, no legal or official document could be found.
The couple had a religious conversion certificate, neither did their Muslim names appear in the marriage certificate nor any evidence submitted in the court could be found till date.
This controversy had resurfaced during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections when Hema Mani was not even mentioned in Dharmendra’s asset declaration.
To which Hema Malini said that this is a very private matter of anyone and it is not appropriate for anyone else to interfere.
Regarding her religious identity, she said that there is not even an iota of truth in this.
Similarly, Dharmendra himself had called the news of conversion false in an interview in 2004.
The fact is that there is no evidence available regarding the couple’s conversion to Islam.
