A mild earthquake was felt in Lahore and several parts of Punjab early Tuesday morning. As reported by the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4. Its epicentre was located about 25 kilometers south-southwest of Lahore, at coordinates 31.33°N and 74.23°E. The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 14 kilometers.
Tremors were experienced in cities including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Okara, and Kasur. Many residents quickly moved outdoors from their homes and workplaces, fearing possible aftershocks. However, the tremors lasted only a few seconds.
Officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department confirmed the earthquake. Rescue and emergency teams were placed on alert as a safety measure.
Why Do Earthquakes Occur?
Experts explain that earthquakes happen due to sudden movements of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
Pakistan is located near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geographical position makes the country more vulnerable to frequent seismic activity.
