Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief General Faiz Hameed has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment.
According to the Public Relations Department of the Pakistan Army (ISPR), the Field General Court Martial (FGC) has sentenced Faiz Hameed to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment. The ISPR said that the FGC process was initiated against former Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed under the Pakistan Army Act, and the FGC process continued for 15 months.
According to the ISPR, four charges were filed against the accused, including involvement in political activities, violation of the Official Secrets Act, misuse of authority and government resources, and causing undue harm to the concerned persons. The ISPR said that after a long and arduous legal process, the accused has been found guilty of all charges. The sentence given by the court will be implemented from December 11, 2025.
The ISPR said that the Field General Court Martial fulfilled all legal requirements and provided the accused with all legal rights, including the right to choose a team of lawyers for his defense.
The ISPR said that the issues of the accused’s collusion with political elements, political chaos and instability are being looked into separately.
It should be noted that Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed was posted as DG ISI and had also been Corps Commander Peshawar.
It should be remembered that former DG ISI Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed was taken into custody on August 12, 2024, after the Top City Court of Inquiry was initiated on the orders of the Supreme Court.
A day after Faiz Hameed was taken into custody, former Prime Minister Imran Khan had claimed during his court appearance that ‘the entire drama of Faiz Hameed is being done to take me to a military court, an attempt is being made to make Faiz Hameed a promissory note witness against me.’
The ISPR had said regarding Faiz Hameed’s detention that in light of the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, disciplinary action has been initiated against Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed under the Pakistan Army Act. The Pakistan Army spokesperson had said that several violations of the Pakistan Army Act have been proven against General (retd) Faiz Hameed after his retirement, on which he has been taken into custody and a field general court martial has been initiated against him.
It should be noted that DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif had explained the details of the army’s self-accountability system in a press conference on May 7, 2024.
The DG ISPR had said that the process of self-accountability in the army is ongoing at all times. The higher the position, the greater the responsibility, and we are proud of our accountability system.
