Nargis Fakhri is an American model and actress, who appears in Hindi films. Fakhri began her career as a model and appeared as a contestant in the The CW series America’s Next Top Model. She made her acting debut in the 2011 romantic drama Rockstar, for which she received a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut nomination. She received praise for starring as a war correspondent in the political thriller Madras Cafe (2013). She later appeared in the successful comedies Main Tera Hero (2014), Spy (2015), andHousefull 3 (2016), the second later of which was a Hollywood production.

Early life

Fakhri was born in Queens, New York,[7] the daughter of Marie and Mohammed Fakhri. Her father was Pakistani and her mother isCzech.[8][2] Her parents divorced when she was six. Her father died when she was young.

Acting career

Fakhri made her Bollywood film debut playing the female lead in Imtiaz Ali’s musical romantic drama Rockstar in 2011. She said that she accepted Indian film offers, so that she could “relate to her culture” and get “closer to her roots”, Pakistan, as both the countries shares the same culture. The film was a major box office success and received critical acclaim. Film critic Taran Adarsh wrote, “Nargis is a stunner as far as looks are concerned, but isn’t persuasive in poignant moments”, however, he praised her on-screen chemistry with co-star Ranbir Kapoor.

She starred opposite John Abraham in Shoojit Sircar’s political thriller Madras Cafe (2013). Film critic Saibal Chatterjee said Fakhri “strikes the right notes”,[12] whereas Rajeev Masand called her “pleasantly competent”. Later that year, she made a special appearance in the action comedy Phata Poster Nikhla Hero to perform in the item number”Dhating Naach” with the film’s lead actor Shahid Kapoor.

In 2014, Fakhri appeared alongside Varun Dhawan and Ileana D’Cruz in David Dhawan’s comedy Main Tera Hero. The film was a financial success, but received mixed reviews from critics. For her performance in the film, Rohit Khilnani said that Fakhri “is not bad” and that “she fits well in this masala comedy and doesn’t disappoint”. Taran Adarsh however disagreed, and said though she “looks great”, she needs to “polish her acting skills”. The same year, Fakhri performed with Salman Khan in the item number “Yaar Naa Miley” in the film Kick. She then played a brief role in Paul Feig’s action comedy Spy (2015), her first Hollywood film. Upon release, the film received critical acclaim, garnering Fakhri an MTV Movie Award nomination, and proved to be a major box-office success with an estimated earning of $235.7 million.

In 2016, Fakhri made a special appearance in the Tamil film Saagasam to perform in the item number “Desi Girl” with the film’s lead actor Prashanth.[19][20][21] Her next film was the biogeographical sports drama Azhar (2016). Based on the life of Indian crickter Mohammad Azharuddin, Fakhri played the role of a real life actress, Azharuddin’s (played byEmraan Hashmi) wife, Sangeeta Bijlani. While the film received positive reviews from critics, but their reaction toward her performance was mixed.Commercially the film underperformed at the box office.[24] She then took a supporting roles for the comedy Housefull 3. Featuring an ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh,Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Lisa Haydon, her portrayal was of a rich brat, who lied to her father that her boyfriend is mute. Housefull 3 emerged as one of top-grossing productions of the year, earning ₹169.63 crore (US$25 million) worldwide. Also that year, she played a minor role as the girlfriend of star Saqib Saleem in the action comedy Dishoom.

As of May 2016, Fakhri is filming for the romantic drama Banjo opposite Riteish Deshmukh. In addition, she has committed to feature in her second Hollywood film, the romantic comedy 5 Weddings.
