A volcano in northeastern Ethiopia has erupted for the first time in about 12,000 years. According to a foreign news agency, the Haile Gebi volcano (located about 805 kilometers northeast of Addis Ababa) erupted on Sunday.

According to local official Mohamed Said, no one was injured in the incident, but the economic situation of the locals is likely to be affected.

He said that there is no previous record of the Haile Gebi volcano erupting and he is concerned about the lives and livelihoods of the locals. Although no human or livestock have died so far, many villages have been covered in ash, which has left very little food for their animals.

The volcano is located at an altitude of about 500 meters and is located in the Rift Valley region (one of the most active zones on Earth) where two tectonic plates collide.

According to the VAAC, ash clouds from the volcano have reached Yemen, Oman, India, and Pakistan.
