Balochistan Hit by 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Third Tremor in 24 Hours Injures 3
A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit parts of Balochistan early Sunday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake happened around 3:30 am and was shallow in depth. The epicentre was nearly 60 kilometers north-northeast of Barkhan city.
A senior levies officer, Tuqeer Shah, said that the quake affected large areas including Rara Shaim and Kingri.
Initial reports said at least three people, including a husband and wife, were injured in the Rara Shaim area after the roof of their house collapsed. More than six houses were damaged, and many others developed cracks.
The injured were taken to the hospital, and rescue teams have been sent to the affected areas to assess the full extent of the damage.
Pakistan is located in a region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This makes the country highly prone to earthquakes.
In the past, Pakistan has experienced several deadly quakes. In 2015, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing nearly 400 people. The rough terrain made rescue operations difficult.
In 2005, a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan, especially Azad Kashmir. It killed over 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless.
Balochistan also faced a deadly quake in 2021, where at least 20 people died and more than 10 were injured. Landslides at that time made it hard for rescue teams to reach the area.
