Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been granted bail in the cheque bounce case, after which he was released from jail.
Actor Rajpal Yadav, who has given Bollywood dozens of blockbuster comedy films, has been granted bail in a case that had been haunting him since 2010.
The actor, who has been facing legal troubles in the long-running cheque bounce case, has finally been granted conditional bail after receiving support from the film industry.
Rajpal Yadav was ordered by the court to surrender in Tihar Jail in the first week of February as he was repeatedly violating the court-approved settlement agreement.
Last week, a Delhi court rejected his bail plea, saying he had failed to pay nearly Rs 9 crore.
Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma had made it clear that Yadav’s imprisonment was not a mere formality but that he had gone to jail because he had not fulfilled the terms of the settlement agreement he had voluntarily entered into.
However, on Monday (February 16), Yadav was granted bail with certain conditions, which gave him temporary relief.
What is the case?
The case dates back to 2010 when Yadav and his wife had taken a loan of nearly Rs 5 crore for their directorial film ‘Aata Pata Lapata’. The loan repayment became difficult after the film flopped at the box office.
Several cheques given to the plaintiff company, Murali Projects Private Limited, bounced, following which legal proceedings were initiated under the Negotiable Instruments Act, while the outstanding amount due to interest and penalties rose to about Rs 9 crore.
Despite the settlement agreement, Yadav allegedly failed to meet the agreed payments, leading to a court action earlier this month and his surrender in Tihar Jail.
