Pakistani TV and film actress Sarwat Gilani said that Joyland was a controversial film and it was made for international audiences.
She revealed that the Joyland team already knew the film might be seen as controversial and it was created for international film festivals, not for release in Pakistan.
While talking in a podcast, she shared that the film was specially made for the Cannes Film Festival, where it was not only appreciated but also won an award.
According to Sarwat, the film’s story touched on sensitive topics in Pakistani society, which made it difficult to release in the country. She also criticized the technical weaknesses in the Pakistani film industry and said that if these areas were improved, the industry would be at a better level today.
She called her experience with the web series Churails a positive one and said that Indian producers appreciated her work, which is something she does not see often with Pakistani producers.
She also said that from now on, she will only work on projects that match international standards because in Pakistani dramas, women are often shown in weak roles, which goes against her beliefs.
