The 1975 film Sholay is often said to be the biggest hit in Indian cinema history. It sold more than 20 crore tickets in India, and millions of tickets were sold abroad, making it the most-watched film.

For a long time, this remained true, but the arrival of cable TV and the internet changed the movie-watching game. Today, the number of viewers is measured by TRPs, streaming minutes, and YouTube views.

However, for those who have watched streaming services and YouTube, they know that the film Sooryavansham, centered around Amitabh Bachchan’s character, holds the title of the most-watched Indian film.

Directed by Satyanarayan, the film starred Amitabh Bachchan, along with Soundarya, Jaya Sudha, Rachna Banerjee, Anupam Kher, and Kader Khan.

Sooryavansham was released in 1999, but its box office performance was disappointing, making only 12.65 crore Indian rupees worldwide. It sold less than 40 lakh tickets in India, which is very low. However, in the last 25 years, it has been watched countless times on TV. According to BARC data by the end of 2017, the film was watched 44 lakh times in homes.

Experts estimate that the number of TV viewers could be between 25 to 30 crore or even more.
