The popular singing show Pakistan Idol is making a grand return after ten years. The new season will feature well-known stars as judges including Fawad Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Zeb Bangash, and Bilal Maqsood.
According to Variety, Pakistan Idol will return a decade after its first season, which aired in December 2013 on Geo Entertainment. That season ended in April 2014 with Lahore’s singer Zamad Baig as the winner. The judges at that time were Bushra Ansari, Hadiqa Kiani, and Ali Azmat. The final episode received a record of one million votes.
Geo had originally bought the rights to the show in 2007, but due to technical and logistic reasons, the launch was delayed for six years. It finally aired as the 50th international version of the Pop Idol franchise.
The production company MH Global has now acquired full rights from Fremantle to present the show again. They are planning something unique for the new season. For the first time in Idol history, the show will be broadcast on five different TV networks at the same time. This multi-platform strategy is meant to reach people from different regions and languages across Pakistan.
Zoya Merchant, director at MH Global, said that their partnership with Fremantle is a big step for Pakistan’s creative and entertainment industry. She added that Pakistan Idol is more than a show, it is a cultural movement.
She said that Pakistan is full of musical talent, and this platform will highlight that talent both nationally and internationally.
The new season will also include digital interaction. Auditions will begin online through the Bigen platform, along with live auditions in big cities and remote areas.
Production is expected to start later this year, while the broadcast and premiere dates will be announced soon.
