Sharmila Tagore is always counted among those few actresses of her time who continued their film career successfully even after marriage and having children.
While many actresses left films after getting married, Sharmila did many great movies even after the birth of her son, Saif Ali Khan.
Although her family always supported her, the journey was not easy. Sharmila Tagore’s daughter, Soha Ali Khan, talked about her mother’s struggles in an interview.
Soha Ali Khan’s revelation:
In an interview, Soha talked about the lives of working mothers. She said that when Saif was young and their mother was busy working in films day and night, sometimes she could not see her son for many days.
Soha said that sometimes her mother could not meet her brother Saif for weeks. When she would come home in a rush just to spend some time with him before he slept, he would get upset and say he didn’t need her and didn’t want her around. He was comfortable with his nanny, so their mother used to wonder why she rushed home at all. This thought would make her so tired that sometimes she became irritated even with her children.
Sharmila Tagore’s confession:
In a Mother’s Day program, Sharmila herself admitted that she used to work in two shifts a day and was mostly absent during the first six years of Saif’s life. She said she couldn’t fully be a mother during that time. Her husband, Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was present, but she wasn’t.
Soha’s own journey as a mother:
Soha said that she feels a lot of sympathy for working mothers. She added that she is very sensitive toward new mothers, especially those who are still learning. Raising a child is a very hard but beautiful job.
