Famous Pakistani actress Urwa writes “Hocane” in English instead of “Hussain” with her name, and a Mufti’s reaction to this in a private TV channel’s program has gone viral.
Currently, Ramadan transmissions are being aired on different TV channels. In these programs, respected Muftis from various Islamic schools of thought participate and share Islamic viewpoints and religious rulings on different social and religious matters.

Recently, during a Ramadan transmission on a private TV channel, a Mufti spoke about the growing trend of deliberately changing Islamic names or giving them a modern style.
He also shared his opinion about Urwa Hocane allegedly changing the spelling of “Hussain” to “Hocane.” The program host asked, “Mufti Sahib, nowadays celebrities are deliberately changing the spelling of their names. What is your opinion about this? For example, Urwa has changed ‘Hussain’ to ‘Hocane.’ Her real name is Hussain, but it is pronounced as Hocane.”
In response, the Mufti said that it is not permissible to call someone by a distorted version of their name. He added that “Hocane” is not an Arabic name, so it is not correct to use such a name.
He said that Ali ibn Abi Talib once saw a person calling someone by a distorted version of his name. He said to him, “You are ظلم (doing injustice) to him,” because pronouncing someone’s name correctly is their right, and this name is given by their parents.
He further added that we should also be careful when choosing Islamic names. For example, some people avoid keeping the name “Muhammad” because it carries great respect and responsibility. In the same way, deliberately changing a name is also not appropriate.
