Why did Imran Abbas object to the release of Sardaar Ji 3?
Pakistani actor Imran Abbas has spoken out against the release of the Indian Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 in Pakistan. Sardaar Ji 3 is a film that created a buzz all over the world because it features not only Indian actors but also Pakistani ones. It became even more controversial because earlier this year in May, a war had broken out between the two countries, which later ended with a ceasefire to prevent further damage.
The shooting of Sardaar Ji 3 was completed before the war. However, many Indians demanded that the film should either be banned or Hania Aamir should be removed from the film and her part re-shot with another Indian actress.
Despite the debates and demands, the trailer of the film was released on 22 June. Hania Aamir was clearly seen in it. On 27 June, the film was released overseas, including in cinemas across Pakistan. The only country where the film was not released was India, due to a ban placed on it.
While most Pakistani celebrities supported Hania Aamir and encouraged people on social media to go watch the film, one actor chose to speak against the film’s release — and that was Imran Abbas.
Imran Abbas, who worked in the Bollywood movie Creature 3D alongside Bipasha Basu years ago, shared a post on Facebook. He said that he had never seen a film being released in Pakistan on the first day of Muharram. He added that this is not about being Shia or Sunni, but some months and dates are very important for all Muslims. He remembered a time when Pakistan Television used to air content without music during such sacred days. But now, even on the 9th of Muharram, dance and music shows are being broadcast.
He further said that nowadays, people treat these holy days as just another holiday and go on picnics with family and friends. He warned that the day is not far when people might even celebrate the Islamic New Year on 1st Muharram with parties. He requested everyone to respect the holy months like Rabi-ul-Awal, Ramadan, and Muharram and understand their importance, no matter which sect they belong to.
Talking about the release of Sardaar Ji 3, Imran said he understands that the cast is not at fault — they just did their job as actors. But the film’s release should have been postponed for a few days by the authorities, especially since the film was already a blockbuster. Delaying the release would not have affected its success.
