Director of the Bollywood film ‘Haqq’, Suparn Verma, has revealed that the film’s lead actress Yami Gautam regularly studied the Holy Quran to bring her character ‘Shazia Bano’ closer to reality and tried to understand it.
In an interview given to the British Broadcasting Corporation, Suparn Verma said that during the preparation of the film, Yami Gautam took guidance from the Holy Quran to understand the depth of her character and this entire process took her about four months. According to the director, references from the Holy Quran have also been included in the film, which is why the film ends with the word “Iqra”.
He said that when talking about Islam, misunderstandings and misinformation often come to the fore, and despite the abundance of information in today’s era, it becomes difficult to determine which is correct. In this context, he wanted to convey more authentic and accurate information to the audience through the film ‘Haqq’.
Suparn Verma added that he has many Muslim friends and that he, as a director, has been doing his own research to better understand the experiences of the Muslim community. According to him, the film was made over a year and a half of work on Islamic laws and social aspects.
The director said that he wanted to dispel misconceptions about topics like “triple divorce” in the film, while also trying to highlight the concept of dowry as a social contract.
He raised the question that if this story is 40 years old, then the real question is what real change has taken place in the lives of women during this period, because even today many women are struggling with social pressure, prejudice and rights issues.
It should be noted that the film ‘Haqq’ is inspired by the story of a woman named Shazia Bano, who falls in love with a lawyer, Abbas Khan, but after she secretly marries a second time, their relationship deteriorates and Shazia approaches the court for justice.
This story is derived from Jagannath Vora’s book ‘Bano: Bharat Ki Betti’ and is said to be inspired by real events. The film also stars Emraan Hashmi in the lead role along with Yami Gautam.
