Today, Saturday, the 9th of Muharram is being observed with deep religious reverence across the country, and Pakistani celebrities’ special posts commemorating the tragedy of Karbala and mourning Imam Hussain have taken over social media.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims around the world—both Shia and Sunni.
It is the month in which the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Imam Hussain (RA), is remembered for his ultimate sacrifice. Imam Hussain, along with his family and loyal companions, was martyred in Karbala while standing against tyranny.

Even today, Shia Muslims honor this sacrifice through mourning rituals, organizing ‘nauhas’ (elegies), and setting up ‘sabeels’ (refreshment stations) to keep the memory of Imam Hussain alive.

Many renowned personalities from Pakistan’s showbiz industry, some of whom belong to the Shia community, actively participate in the religious observances of Muharram every year with utmost devotion and respect.
These celebrities include Imran Abbas Naqvi, Natasha Ali, Naveed Raza, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Madiha Rizvi, Resham, Yumna Zaidi, and Sadia Imam, who mark the occasion with heartfelt and unique posts on social media.
Imran Abbas:

ecently, a video of Imran Abbas surfaced on social media showing him attending a religious gathering (majlis) where mourning rituals were taking place.

Imran Abbas is known to observe Muharram every year with deep reverence, devotion, and emotional connection. He often shares images and videos from Karbala on his social media platforms, reflecting his spiritual bond with the sacred month.

As in previous years, this time too, glimpses of him participating in majlis, reciting elegies and marsiyas, and joining mourning processions have gone viral, resonating with his fans and followers.

Mohsin Abbas Haider:

Mohsin Abbas also shared a video on the photo and video sharing app Instagram, in which he can be seen reciting a noha (elegy).

In the caption, the actor included a few poignant lines from the noha, which read:
“Karbala mein aik thi maqdal aur bahtar hain shaheed,
Aur yeh bas Shaam tak ki raah ka nuksaan hai,
Karbala mushkil hai lekin Shaam se aasan hai.”

(Translation: In Karbala, there was one battlefield and seventy-two martyrs,
The loss is only of the path until Shaam (Syria),
Karbala is difficult, but Shaam is harder.
)

In addition to this, he also attended a niyaz (religious food offering) hosted by a friend and participated in a mourning procession (juloos-e-aza).

Sadia Imam:

Actress Sadia Imam is also among those celebrities who make it a point to visit Karbala every year during Muharram and share glimpses of their spiritual journey on social media.

Just like every year, this year too she visited Karbala before Muharram and actively took part in the religious rituals there. Upon returning home, she also hosted majalis (religious gatherings), glimpses of which have now gone viral online.

Naveed Raza:

Actor Naveed Raza also belongs to a Shia family, and keeping with tradition, he set up a Sabeel (refreshment stall) outside his home on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

On the photo and video sharing app Instagram, Naveed updated his stories, sharing moments of mourning and religious rituals with his fans during the days of Muharram.

Natasha Ali:

Actress Natasha Ali also spends the days of Muharram in Iraq every year, and continuing this tradition, she is currently in Karbala this year as well, sharing moment-by-moment glimpses from there on social media.

On the photo and video sharing platform Instagram, Natasha updated her stories, where she can be seen wearing an Iranian chador and covering her face. Other highlights include footage of Ziyarat, majalis (religious gatherings), and mourning rituals.

Resham:

Pakistani actress Resham, who is known for her deep reverence during Muharram, is also among those celebrities who observe the holy month with great respect and devotion.

Every year, she not only organizes niyaz (food offering) at her home but also personally cooks and distributes food and drinks among the poor. This year too, she arranged sharbat and meals as langar (free food distribution), expressing her love for the Ahl-e-Bait (A.S.).
Aliza Sultan:

It is said that Feroze Khan’s ex-wife, Alizeh Sultan, also belongs to a Shia household. This year, she shared a Muharram-related post on her Instagram which read:
“What can this world give you when it didn’t even give water to Hussain.
Yumna Zaidi:
And how could we possibly forget actress Yumna Zaidi on this list? She is one of those artists who spend the days of Muharram every year in Iraq and is usually seen distancing herself from social media during this time.
This is why Yumna Zaidi hasn’t shared any posts from her Instagram account since June 26.

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to these celebrities, other names are also included in this list—such as Noor Bukhari, Zubab Rana, Madiha Rizvi, and Hina Rizvi.
